NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Oct. 13, 2015 — The South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority (RWA) earned the Platinum Award for Utility Excellence from the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies (AMWA), according to a press release.
RWA also received the New England Water Works Association’s (NEWWA) Utility of the Year Award in September, noted the release.
"The recognition of these two distinguished awards demonstrates the value of our commitment to conscious capitalism as a vehicle to support stakeholder interdependencies and elevate sustainability," said RWA President and CEO Larry Bingaman in the release. “We’re excited that our focus on the tenets of conscious capitalism is yielding award-winning results that are both quantitative and qualitative, improving the bottom line and mitigating rate increases for customers."
Seven other utilities across the country earned the Platinum Award, stated the release. Recipients must have earned the Gold Award three years before applying for the Platinum Award. The honor recognizes achievement in implementing the Attributes of Effective Utility Management, which were developed by utility executives, commissioned by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, AMWA and other associations.
Through its efforts to improve operating efficiency, RWA mitigated rate increases by 12 percent, reported the release. It has also educated more than 350,000 students through environmental education programs about how peoples’ effects on ecological quality.
"AMWA awards recognize the extraordinary performance of water agencies where management vision and employee commitment create a sustainable utility producing ample supplies of clean, safe drinking water," shared Chuck M. Murray, AMWA president and general manager of Fairfax Water, in the release. "The communities served by these award winners should be proud of the accomplishments of their forward-thinking, exceptionally well-managed public utilities."
