LISLE, Ill. — The Water Quality Association (WQA) asks the public to take part in Protect Your Groundwater Day on Sept. 9, according to a press release.
Protect Your Groundwater Day was started by the National Ground Water Association (NGWA) to encourage the protection of groundwater resources, stated the release.
The release reported that the prolonged droughts in California and Texas have helped to emphasize the importance of preserving groundwater, which is connected from below to most sources of surface water and makes up 99 percent of all available fresh water in the world.
Groundwater delivers 53.5 billion gallons of water a day for agricultural purposes and is the source water supply for 13 million households with private water wells, as well as provides a large portion of water to more than 40,000 community water systems in the U.S., noted the release.
