MCALLEN, Texas — Oct. 6, 2015 — Through a $1.25 million contract, Xylem Inc. will provide treatment technology to the South Wastewater Treatment Plant, according to a press release.
Every year, the facility provides 240 million gallons of treated wastewater for irrigation at the McAllen Palm View Golf Course, noted the release. Xylem’s technology will treat up to 10 million gallons of wastewater per day (MGD).
Treated effluent produced by the plant will be treated by Xylem’s Wedeco Duron ultraviolet (UV) system before the waste is discharged or reused, stated the release. Workers will not need to store large quantities of potentially hazardous chlorine on-site with the use of the UV technology.
The UV system is designed to provide disinfection at the lowest power consumption, reported the release. Xylem’s Flygt Compact Submersible propeller pumps will recycle water in the aeration basins for greater efficiency.
"We work with customers to ensure plants run at optimum efficiency using sustainable technologies like UV, facilitating maximum water reuse," said Jay Jordan, Xylem senior sales engineer, in the release. The fact that our Wedeco Duron system enables the lamps to be easily retrieved for maintenance will significantly reduce maintenance effort of the system. Its extensive performance validation as well as the intelligent autonomous control are crucial factors in meeting permit requirements. Cost-efficient construction costs and ease of installation were also important reasons for selecting our solution."
With the UV system, the plant can produce 10 MGD of treated water, with a peak two-hour flow of 31 MGD, shared the release. The system will be completed by January 2018.
