Analyzer
The InfraCal 10mm Quartz Cuvette Holder Analyzer, Model CVH, manufactured by Wilks Enterprise, was one of the infrared instruments used for developing this new ASTM standard recently approved for measuring total oil and grease (TOG) and total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) concentration levels in water and soil. ASTM Method D 7066 – 04 covers the use of a dimmer/trimer of chlorotrifluoroethylene (S-316) for analysis of recoverable oil and grease and nonpolar material by infrared determination.

Chemical identification system
Inficon has introduced the Hapsite Smart SituProbe Chemical Identification System and Scentograph Chemical Monitoring Systems for water. The systems are designed to provide on-site screening of toxic industrial chemicals and chemical warfare agents in water. The Hapsite system is a field-portable GC/MS with purge and trap technology. It processes samples within minutes without leaving the site. This virtually eliminates chain-of-custody and sample-contamination/ degradation problems. Scentograph systems are designed for on-site spot analysis or continuous monitoring of VOCs in water using purge and trap GC technology. They handle applications like source water protection and early alert for water contamination.

Uranium analysis
In response to the new 30 ppb EPA limit on uranium in water supplies, LaMotte has released a field kit for uranium analysis. The kit uses three reagents to eliminate interferences and to develop a color due directly to uranium within one minute. The developed color can then be measured on a colorimeter. The method can determine concentrations below 30 ppb.

Nitrate monitoring
YSI Environmental has introduced the YSI 9600 Nitrate Monitor, designed for continuous monitoring of nitrate levels in water. The instrument can be used to monitor downstream of wastewater outfalls, and for watershed and TMDL studies. It features user-selectable sampling intervals, and its Nuview™ software allows for simplified setup, whether the nitrate levels at the site are expected to be typical (0-5 mg/L) or high (5-10 mg/L). The instrument uses flow injection analysis technology combined with a chemical reaction sequence, as defined in literature from the USEPA and Standard Methods.

Water monitoring
Utilities taking a proactive approach to managing their water networks will find the new Event Monitor™ Trigger System from Hach maximizes the value of continuous, remote water quality surveillance. The system receives measurements from the multiple sensors of the company's Water Distribution Monitoring Panel (WDMP) or PipeSonde™ In-Pipe Probe and the astroTOC UV On-Line TOC Analyzer and relates all measurements as a single, real-time trigger signal indicating water quality changes in the distribution system. By 'learning' sensor measurement combinations detected by the trigger signal and storing them in its internal plant event library, the system is able to recognize network events immediately as they occur and alert operating personnel.
