WILLIAMSPORT, PA, Mar. 23, 2011 -- Galeton Borough Water Authority was forced to use an alternate permitted water source to serve its customers after silt and erosion from a Chesapeake Energy construction project impacted a tributary from the Authority's regular drinking water supply.

After a routine inspection of the pre-construction site of the natural gas drilling well pad, Pennsylvania DEP cited Chesapeake for a number of violations of the Clean Streams Law and Oil and Gas Act. Subsequent inspections resulted in additional infractions, leading to yesterday's order that Chesapeake must cease work at the site until the violations are corrected.

Chesapeake must also review its Erosion and Sediment Control Plan -- and revise it if necessary to prevent future damage.

Only when all terms are met will Chesapeake be allowed to resume operations.
